TMJ & Jaw Pain

TMJ disorders cause jaw pain, clicking, locking and headaches. Most respond to conservative care: jaw exercises, manual therapy, neck treatment and habit changes such as clenching.

Understanding the condition

The jaw joint is one of the busiest in the body.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jaw to the skull, in front of each ear, and it moves thousands of times a day when you chew, talk and swallow. TMJ disorders describe pain and dysfunction in the joint and the chewing muscles around it, and commonly cause jaw ache, clicking, restricted opening and headaches.

Clicking on its own is common and often harmless. It matters when it comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening. Causes include clenching and grinding, stress, jaw injury, arthritis, and neck posture, because the upper neck and jaw share muscles and nerve pathways.

Most TMJ problems settle with conservative care: manual therapy, jaw exercises, neck treatment and changes to habits like clenching and hard chewing. Surgery is rarely needed. A locked jaw, jaw injury or fever with facial swelling needs prompt medical or dental assessment.

Why it happens

The root causes we look for.

01
Clenching and grinding
Overloads the chewing muscles and joint, often worse under stress or at night.
02
Neck and posture
Forward head posture and upper-neck stiffness change how the jaw moves.
03
Jaw injury or dental work
Trauma or long procedures can irritate the joint.
04
Joint wear or arthritis
Degenerative change can add pain and clicking in some people.
Symptoms we treat

Recognise any of these?

Pain in front of the ear or along the jaw
Clicking or popping when opening the mouth
Jaw locking or limited opening
Pain when chewing or yawning
Headaches around the temples
Ear fullness or facial ache
Our Approach

How we'll actually treat it.

STEP 1
1
Assess jaw & neck
Movement, muscle and joint testing of the jaw, plus the upper neck that often drives it.
STEP 2
2
Settle the pain
Gentle manual therapy, relaxation of the chewing muscles and advice on rest positions.
STEP 3
3
Retrain movement
Controlled jaw exercises for smooth, symmetrical opening and coordination.
STEP 4
4
Habits & prevention
Addressing clenching, posture and stress patterns that keep it going.
Services Involved

The disciplines we'll combine.

Every programme braids two or three of our core services. Here's the typical pairing for this condition.

The results

Treatment that actually holds.

Because the neck and jaw work together, treating both often produces the biggest change in jaw pain and tension headaches.

Clicking without pain or locking is common and usually needs no treatment. See someone if it comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening.
Yes. Manual therapy, jaw exercises, neck treatment and habit advice are a first-line approach for many TMJ disorders.
A dentist may recommend one for grinding. It is often used alongside physiotherapy rather than instead of it.
A jaw that will not open or close, jaw injury, or facial swelling with fever need prompt assessment.
