Osteoarthritis Knee

Non-surgical management of knee osteoarthritis. The evidence is clear — strength training, mobility work, and weight management beat any passive treatment. We programme all three.

Understanding the condition

Knee arthritis responds to strength, not rest.

If you have knee osteoarthritis you have probably been told to take it easy. The evidence says the opposite: strength training, mobility work and weight management beat any passive treatment for knee OA — and can delay or even avoid surgery. The joint is not simply wearing out; it responds to the right load.

Our non-surgical programme combines all three pillars. We build the muscle that supports and offloads the joint, restore the mobility arthritis has stiffened, and guide load and weight so the knee has less to carry. Pain modulation along the way keeps you able to do the work that actually changes things.

Why it happens

The root causes we look for.

01
Muscle weakness
Weak quads and glutes leave the arthritic joint to absorb more load than it should.
02
Inactivity cycle
Pain leads to doing less, which weakens the joint further and worsens the pain.
03
Excess load
Extra body weight multiplies the force passing through the knee with every step.
04
Stiffness
Lost range makes the joint feel worse and movement more painful than it needs to be.
Symptoms we treat

Recognise any of these?

Stiffness on first movement of the day
Pain going down stairs
Aching after long walks
Swelling in the knee joint
Grinding or grating on movement
Pain that worsens in cold weather
Our Approach

How we'll actually treat it.

WEEK 1
1
Education & screen
Understand what OA actually is, what helps and what doesn't. Full screen.
WEEK 2–6
2
Pain reduction
Manual therapy, gentle movement, and graded loading to settle symptoms.
WEEK 6–16
3
Strength loading
Progressive resistance training — the single most effective intervention for OA.
ONGOING
4
Maintenance
A home programme, nutrition support, and quarterly check-ins to maintain the gains.
Services Involved

The disciplines we'll combine.

Every programme braids two or three of our core services. Here's the typical pairing for this condition.

The results

Treatment that actually holds.

Knee osteoarthritis is far more manageable than most people are led to believe — with a consistent strength and mobility programme, patients routinely reduce pain, move better and put off surgery for years.

No — this is the most important myth to dispel. The right strengthening and mobility work reduces arthritis pain and improves function; it does not wear the joint out faster. Inactivity is what makes arthritic knees worse.
Many people can delay or avoid surgery with a committed strengthening and weight-management programme — it is the recommended first-line treatment. If you do eventually need surgery, going in stronger improves your recovery.
Generally not. Arthritic joints can be uncomfortable during and after activity without being harmed. We teach you to interpret your pain and load the knee in a way that is both safe and effective.
Significantly — every kilo lost reduces the force through the knee several times over with each step. Combined with strengthening, it is one of the most powerful things you can do for an arthritic knee.
A blend of targeted strengthening, mobility and low-impact conditioning, progressed gradually. We build a programme around your specific knee and fitness rather than handing out generic advice.
They can reduce pain and inflammation for a period, which sometimes creates a useful window to push harder with strengthening. They don't address the underlying weakness or stiffness, so we see them as a possible add-on rather than a substitute for the exercise programme.
When a genuine, consistent strengthening and weight-management programme has been given a fair trial — usually several months — and quality of life is still significantly limited. We will tell you honestly if your knee looks like it's heading that way.
Mild, short-lived swelling after a harder session is common and not necessarily a problem. Swelling that's significant, lasts for days, or comes with increasing pain is worth flagging to us so we can adjust your loading.
