Understanding the condition

Strength and balance keep you independent.

Staying mobile, steady and independent is one of the most important things physiotherapy can protect in later life. Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing — they are largely preventable with the right strength and balance work. And it is never too late to start: older adults gain strength remarkably well.

Our geriatric programmes are patient-paced and built around your life — the stairs you climb, the walk you want to keep taking, the grandchildren you want to lift. We focus on balance, leg strength and confidence, often in small, sociable group settings that make the work something to look forward to.

Why it happens

The root causes we look for.

01
Muscle loss with age
Strength declines naturally over the years unless it is actively maintained.
02
Balance decline
Reduced balance and reaction time raise the risk of falls and stumbles.
03
Reduced activity
Doing less leads to losing more — a cycle that quietly erodes independence.
04
Joint stiffness
Arthritis and stiffness make everyday movements harder and discourage activity.
Symptoms we treat

Recognise any of these?

Feeling unsteady on the feet
Difficulty rising from a chair
Avoiding stairs or uneven ground
One or more recent falls
Loss of muscle strength
Stiffness on getting going

Ask us directly
No — strength and balance can be improved at any age, and older adults respond impressively to the right programme. It is genuinely never too late to become steadier and stronger.
Yes — targeted strength and balance training is one of the most effective, well-evidenced ways to reduce falls. Falls are far more preventable than most people assume.
Everything is patient-paced and tailored to the individual's ability, then progressed gradually. The aim is to challenge balance and strength safely — we never push beyond what is right for the person.
Yes — many older adults do best in small group settings, which add motivation and a sociable element alongside the physical benefits. It often becomes a highlight of the week.
Absolutely. Fear of falling can be as limiting as the physical decline itself. We rebuild strength, balance and — just as importantly — the confidence to move freely again.
Clinic sessions are our main format, particularly for the strength and balance equipment we use, but we can discuss what's realistic if mobility makes travelling difficult. We will talk through the options for your specific situation.
Yes, and it's actively recommended — the right strength and balance programme is one of the best tools we have against osteoporosis-related fracture risk, as long as the exercises are correctly selected and progressed, which we manage carefully.
Any recent fall, near-fall, or growing hesitation on stairs and uneven ground is worth assessing — these are exactly the warning signs that respond best to early intervention, before confidence and independence are lost.
